Week of January 12, 2009

Monday, January 12th
Bell Work: What are three of the behavior expectations when there is a guest teacher?
1. Read Aloud: “Before You Read”
2. Read alone or as a table group: “from The Power of Non-Violence”
3. Complete “from The Power of Non-Violence” workbook pages
4. Turn in packet at the end of class.
Homework: Think about information (statistics, quotes, etc…) that you need to gather to support your thesis.

Tuesday, January 13th
(We will begin AIMS oral reading testing all day today.)
Bell Work: Biofuel (define in own words, draw a picture, & rate understanding)
1. Read “Biofuels 101” alone or with a partner.
2. Then, use the QAR (question answer relationship) reading strategy to answer questions about the article.

Wednesday, January 14th
Bell Work: Parallel (define in own words, draw a picture, & rate understanding)
1. Mini Lesson: “Creating Parallel Lists”
2. Quiet Writing: Pick two of your topic sentence (folders) to write a parallel list for. Place one list inside of each of them. You need to complete a minimum of two parallel lists.
3. Share Time: Choose one of your lists and read it to your partner. Give each other verbal feedback (1wish &/or 1 star).

Thursday, January 15th
Bell Work: Source (define in own words, draw a picture, & rate understanding)
1. Mini Lesson: “Gathering Outside Supporting Information”
2. Quiet Writing:
a. Decide which type of outside information you need to gather
i. statistics=survey, internet research
ii. quotes=research books/internet, interview
b. Write out your questions. If you need to have copies made, be sure to turn in your original and request by the end of the day today.
3. Share Time: Quickly “Whip Around” the room with each student telling what kind of outside information he/she will use in this essay.

Friday, January 16th
Bell Work: Turn in bell work sheet.
1. We will go to the library.
2. Return, renew, and check out books.
3. Students will continue gathering their outside source information.
4. Complete, evaluate, and turn in their essay materials.
5. If finished early, students will read silently for the rest of the hour.
